If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away? Give textual evidence to support your answer.
I was surprised to read that David's parents were the runaways, and not David himself. I think they ran away because they wanted better for their children. I think they realized that the way people's lives are run for them in that town wasn't right. In the chapter, David is semi-explaining to Tally about the situation.
"They are doctors."
"Huh. But...hang on. Doctors? How old were they when they ran away?"
"Old enough. They weren't uglies anymore. I think it's called being a middle pretty?"
I think this conversation between David and Tally shows that his parents were already involved with the changing process, they were half way there. Then they changed their minds. Something was bad enough to make them want to leave.
