- Tally is pulled to shore by the mystery fire starters in masks
- They give her some "oh-two" to get her breathing back to normal
- They are all new pretties when they de-mask
- She and her board are loaded onto the flying machine (aka: a helocopter; saved from the Rustys because it can be used more freely)
- They are rangers, on a mission to burn a super-breed of flowers that spreads quickly and is choking out everything else around it
- They know she's headed to the Smoke
- They tell her the Smokies are crazy for wanting to stay ugly; they are also secretive and don't trust many people
- They tell her if the Smoke doesn't work out, she can always volunteer with them
- They drop her off at the meeting point
- Tally realizes she's close to when she'll have to sell out Shay and is getting nervous

Tally is starting to realize how severe the situation she has found herself in is. Before her journey, Tally was focused on the fact that she and Peris were going to be together; it was her driving force. Now, she's made this hard journey, she's made it farther than she thought she would. Her time to summon Dr. Cable and crew is near and she's doubting her decision. It's called a conscience, Tally, deal with it.
