Blog Post #6- "Shay"

Write a one paragraph summary of the chapter.

Tally bungee jumps from the Garbo Mansion to get away from the people at the party.  She is convinced she is going to be caught, but at least she got to see Peris.  The wardens are scowering NPT looking for whoever set up the alarm and caused the confusion.  Tally is now certain she is going to be caught and never turned pretty.  As she gets to the bridge where she can cross back over, she meets another ugly, Shay.  Shay understands Tally's draw to NPT.  They realize that they are better off as friends.
What have you learned about Shay?  Is she like Tally?  Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay.

I think Shay is like Tally because she is willing to escape town just for a glimpse at NPT.  She is a rule breaker, but looking for a good friend.  I think she will find this in Tally.  I also think that Shay and Tally will work together on trying to become pretty.

Why do you think New Pretty town advocates bungee jumping?

New Pretty Town probably advocates bungee jumping because it is wild and exciting.  Normal people don't bungee jump everyday.  In my opinion, normal people don't ever bungee jump because that's just nuts.  NPT is a "cutting edge" community.  They only do cool stuff, so of course they bungee jump.  Why not?!

Find information about the history of bungee jumping and post it along with the website URL.

Bungee has quite an old origin. The idea of this way of jumping comes from the ancient ritual "Gkol" performed in the Pentecost Island in the Pacific Archipelago of Vanuatu. The legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife and she ran away and climbed a Banyan tree where she wrapped her ankles with liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the woman jumped from the tree and so did her husband not knowing what had his wife done. So he died but the woman survived. The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they began to practise such jumps in case they got in similar situation. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvest and also for proving manhood.



Modern bungee jumping as we know it today actually started on the 1st of April ( Fools' Day ) 1979 when group of people from the Oxford University Dangerous Sport Club, impressed by a film about "vine jumpers", jumped from 245-Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, England. Using nylon braided, rubber shock cord instead of vines, and dressed in their customary top hat and tails, they performed a four man simultaneous jump .The enthysiasts promptly were arrested for this. But at least hit the world press the next day. The new adrenaline mania has been started. The D.S.C. performed many other jumps, including one off the Golden Gate Bridge. In early 1988, A.J. Hackett and Chris Allum, opened the first commercial jump site in Ohakune, New Zealand. Hackett also made a great commercial show in 1987 when he jumped from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.


. As part of the site publicity, Hackett performed an astounding bungee jump from the Eiffel Tower! Nowadays there have already been a lot of towers,cranes,bridges and even hot-air balloons serving as platforms for jumping and bungee is the simplest and easily understood of the aerial extreme sports.

Blog Post #4- "Best Friends Forever"

Create characterization for:

• Tally

Tally is spunky and doesn't mind breaking the rules.  She still gets nervous about things, but that's what makes her special.  She is passionate about her friends and maintaining her friednships.  She likes to be different but at the same time, yerns to be "pretty" because then she can hang out with Peris all the time.

• Peris

Peris is now breath-takingly pretty.  He is still the Peris Tally knows and loves, just much better looking.  He is very laid back and can be assertive when necessary.  He is well liked and popular among his peers.

How do you feel about the friendship of Tally & Peris?  Are they true best friends?  Why or why not?

I think at one point, Tally and Peris were best friends.  Now, however, with all the changes he has been going through, it is pulling him away from the things he has in common with Tally.  I think the true test of their friendship will come further into the book.

Blog #3- "New Pretty Town"

This is ironic because if they are all pretty, why are they wearing masks?  Now, Tally can fit in.

• Why do you think Tally chose to wear a mask to a party that was deemed "white tie"?

Because she needed to go unnoticed and what better way than to WEAR A MASK.

• Find information about the history of masks and post it.  How can you relate this to Tally's decision?

I think this relates to Tally because she is so desperate to see Peris again, she has to hide behind a mask for the confidence to go into the forbidden town and then party.

Blog Post #2- "New Pretty Town"

1 paragraph- Have you ever had a friend like Peris who abandoned your friendship after moving?  Explain.

When I was in first grade, I had a best friend named Charlie.  She was so nice to everybody and you couldn't help but want to me around her.  She and her mom moved the summer before second grade to Colorado.  We never got the chance to exchange addresses or what not because we were so young at the time.  We lost all contact with each other for years.  It wasn't until I was in college that we reconncected randomly through email.

2. toothbrush pill- they don't physically brush their teeth, they take a pill that does it for them

Blog Post #1- Before Reading

• How do you define beauty?

Beauty to me are the qualities that make you rememberable to others.  Whether it's your kind eyes, your huge toothy grin or your contagious laugh, everyone has something beautiful about them.

• What would the world be like if everyone was "beautiful?"

I think if everyone in the world was "beautiful", people would get bored with everyone being the same and someone would venture out and try to be ugly, just to be different.
